000 ABPZ30 KNHC 011138 TWSEP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 800 AM PDT Tue Aug 01 2017 For the eastern North Pacific, east of 140 degrees west longitude: This July was quite busy in the eastern North Pacific basin, with five named storms forming, four of which became hurricanes. Two of the hurricanes, Eugene and Fernanda, reached major hurricane strength. One unnamed tropical depression also formed in July. Based on a 30-year (1981-2010) climatology, three to four named storms typically form in the basin in July, with two becoming hurricanes and one of those reaching major hurricane intensity. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in July was more than 2.5 times the average activity for the month, making it the fifth most active July on record. The ACE for the season to date is almost twice the average.
