000 ABNT30 KNHC 011158 TWSAT MONTHLY TROPICAL WEATHER SUMMARY NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL 800 AM EDT THU SEP 01 2016 For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico: Four named storms formed in the Atlantic basin in August. Two of these, Earl and Gaston, became hurricanes, and Gaston became a major hurricane over the central Atlantic. Based on a 30-year (1981-2010) climatology, three named storms typically form in the Atlantic basin in August, with two becoming hurricanes. In terms of the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in the Atlantic basin so far in 2016 is near normal.
